DESCRIPTION:
Antique large pewter pitcher that
was hand engraved and presented as a horse racing trophy in 1865.
We have been unable to determine if this is
American or British, but our best guess is that it is American, perhaps with an
association with Connecticut.
The inscription reads:
Presented
To
Deacon Daboll
BY THE
Francis
Galloping Park Association
For the
“Pluck” he displayed in his trot
against the
favorite horse “Mike”
Oct 12, 1865
MARKS:
There are no apparent manufacturer
marks to the pewter pitcher.
CONDITION:
In overall fair to good antique condition free from significant damages,
losses, breaks and repairs. The
inscription is in good condition and is easy to read.
There are expected color and patina variations to the surface of the
metal.
We have not tried to clean or
polish this.
There are gentle bends to the top edge and to the foot rim that could
likely be improved by a metal restorer if desired.
There are scattered typical minor scratches,
pits, and tiny dents to the body.
There
is heavy staining and signs of long-term use to the interior.
Despite the imperfections, this will display as in overall good
condition.
MEASUREMENTS:
Maximum
height is approximate 8 ¼ inches including the handle. The maximum length is around 9 ½ inches, and
the
diameter of the body is about 6 5/8 inches.
